As a vital and vibrant part of the Smithsonian experience, we engage people with plants and gardens, inform on the roles both play in our cultural and natural worlds, and inspire appreciation and stewardship.
Established in 1972 to manage the museum grounds, Smithsonian Gardens extends the Smithsonian’s museum experience in a public garden setting, inspiring visitors with exceptional displays and educating them about horticulture, plants, the natural and built environments, and artistic design. Nice plant. I am never, ever gonna remember that name! What about giving us a common name.
❤
These are gorgeous ❤
They remind me of miniature Lilly pads. I’ve always been a fan of plants that climb/drape. It makes a landscape look whimsical 😊
She’s so cute
Ese arbol da unas flores muy aromaticas..JAZMIN DE PERSIA..O..JAZMIN DEL CABO.VERDE.., NECESITA MUCHO CUIDADO.., 😮❤❤
Brussels sprouts aren't a flop simply because they haven't produced sprouts _yet_. The leaves are perfectly edible and delicious, and with a bit of shade cloth and breeze, they'll hold out through the summer until the sprouts are produced. And the pepper plants can still be fertilized and brought into production. They're not flops simply because you've neglected them all season. If anything, it seems like that would make _you_ the flop, yeah? Doesn't feel so good when the labels go the other way, does it?
Oh my, she's beautiful, but the first thing i said was, "Look at that biiig girl, put her in the ground!😂." pot bigger than my trunk space
Love it! 💚🐝🦋🌻🐦
Spectacular!
What an outstanding specimen! 👏
So the premise of Jeepers Creepers. Got it.
Nearly 90% of flowering plants rely on approximately 200,000 species of animal pollinators for fertilization. From butterflies and bees, to flies and beetles, most pollinators are insects. But birds, bats, and small mammals also pollinate plants. #PollinatorWeek

☘️amazing!
Wow!!
I do this with my natives
this is in my neighbors yard i am gonna ask for the seeds when it pods
Very interesting. Does alyssum get cabbage looper worms? Was planting it with my veggies but wanted to make sure I’m not bringing those worms in.
So it was introduced to Texas & native too SAmerica
Good information
There are actually a lot of serviceberry street trees in DC that are doing well, especially when they have afternoon shade.
Do orchids absorb nutrients more efficiently with mycorrhiza than if given the nutrients NPK directly? Why do seeds need the fungus to germinate? Can they also be germinated in npk solution?

A wonderful presentation full of excellent pointers on making garden rooms no matter what type of outdoor space you have. Thank you.
A great illustration of Piedmont Sprawl at 7:50. People don't realize that the policies and laws that they support will have a huge and very negative long-term consequence. Open immigration, the changes started in 1965, or so, have meant huge numbers of people entering the area, and all those people need houses, roads, schools, businesses, etc. While we talk about taking care of our gardens, we forget that this idea extends to our state and our nation as a whole. You cannot allow immigration in unchecked, no matter if it's interstate or extrastate. We often like to brag that people from Illinois or New York are moving to the southeast because we're so awesome in so many ways, but we forget just what that means in the grand scheme of things. Look at those images of the population density and all the open spaces that we've lost. That's not caused by citizens of the state having babies. Rather, that's tens of millions of people moving here not just from the North or the West Coast, but from dozens of other nations, as well. It's great that we are moving more and more towards native plants to protect our ecosystem and open spaces, but I worry that folks don't see the parallels with other issues. We must "tend our garden" in every sense of the word, even when that means making tough calls.
Really like these shorts, perhaps you guys could show the bloom if it’s blooming. This guy had such elegant blooms
Great talk and presentation. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Nice
Vampires mudt stay away from you.
Plant science knowledge in those sketches, the joy of seeing those pictures, TQ. Inspiring.
Can the few buds on the branch that's shown at the end be saved? I know it was mentioned the entire bark was pretty dead but there were still some buds on top. Curious if those buds can be saved.
Great Job! Very interesting too
That was interesting
I always wondered who did these incredible illustrations!
Such a wealth of knowledge! I'm so glad this popped up on my feed 🙏🏿💝🙏🏿
This was useful
The snag thing works! I left a 2.5 ft diameter, 10 ft tall maple snag in my front yard 5 years ago. Got the stinkeye from a couple neighbors but it covered up with Virginia Creeper and has been habitat for several bird species every year. It's now beginning to crumble so the top portion will need to be taken down soon. The rest can remain for bugs and such and keep putting organic material into the soil for the surrounding plants as it degrades.
We also need localities to recognize the problem and pass legislation to require public landscaping to include of natives and bar the worst plants on the invasive species list.
We need nurseries to start selling fewer invasives and more native plants to support the wildlife that is present. There are few nurseries close to me that specialize in native plants. In the ones that don't it's rare to find a native plant or even a worker who is familiar with native plants.
Thank you I kept thinking the ants were harming my peonies but now I’m glad they’re there
You had me at gin and tonic! Thanks for the great info!
He's pretty hot
Fantastic video, learning so much and love the photos as examples
❤
What about having to cut these grasses down in spring? Then left with nothing for several months…???
what are some coordinating plants that are native that would be of interest in spring and early early summer before these grasses come back? Anyone have any suggestions?
Does it tolerance tropical heat?
That’s incredible! Nature is full of surprises, if I saw those inflorescences I am sure I wouldn’t have realised it was an orchid. It’s wonderful
